My name is Michael Black, and I am a Sydney-based artist primarily working on creating public murals and original canvas art.
For over a decade, we have seen the high interest from property stakeholders engaging with artists to bring unique value to the space and community through their art practice. I had the privilege to see this outworked in numerous large to small murals and public art installations throughout my career.
From a young age, I was always inspired by what has typically known as 'street art'. The immediacy, skill, and impact left me with a desire to learn more and find out how I might transition into this industry one day. I had the blessing early on in my career to connect with some well-known individuals in the Australian mural scene that encouraged me and gave me a perspective that I could have a crack myself. Today I am privileged to create in collaboration with architects, interior designers, stylists, property developers, retailers, and galleries, producing artwork that sits in spaces all over the world.
But does public art increase the value of the building? The answer is yes! As business owners, we often want to stand out from the crowd and have unique and relevant relationships with our community and clients. The integration of murals and public art into the vacant spaces provides the property owner with an identifiable landmark that stands out from the dull cityscape. This becomes a magnet for social media posts, increased foot traffic, and inspires an individual. Public art's transformative nature applied correctly enables the prior unstimulating location to become a significant, inspiring environment that at times can spark required creativity, conversation, or simply an admiration of beauty.
Typically for communities to experience high-quality art in the flesh, they would need to visit a gallery or museum. Public art breaks away from this social construct, allowing the everyday person to experience astonishing art situated in a culturally relevant way.
Personally, in my work, I want to create immersive environments that enable others to feel inspired every time they encounter one of my works. Looking into the future, I would love to collaborate with distinct clients and creatives to push the boundaries from what's known as traditional murals into a variety of alternative surfaces and sculptural 3D elements. Coming out of lockdown, I am excited to be back on the brushes working again with clients who want to stand out and create high-quality inspiring spaces through art.
